Difference Between Fleas and Ticks

There are plenty of differences between these two parasites, but the one thing they have in common is that they like your Texan blood. Differences between fleas and ticks include:

  • Treatment: Flea infestations require treatment of your home, car, and animal. Ticks require different treatment and may also need to be removed from your body.

  • Type: A flea is an insect, has six legs, and can jump. A tick is an arachnid that can have six to eight legs and cannot jump or fly.

  • Temperature: Fleas thrive in the warmer months. Ticks do better in the warm months too but can live year-round even in the snow.

  • Infestation: Fleas are more likely to infest your home. They multiply rapidly. Ticks live primarily outdoors.

  • Hosts: Adult fleas find one host, usually a dog or cat, they will live on the animal until they die. Ticks, on the other hand, feed on multiple hosts for up to two weeks at a time.

Differences aside, neither of these pests are welcome on Conroe properties.

Problems They Cause

Both parasites have the potential to be dangerous to humans and animals. Leaving you with an itchy bite mark is bad enough, but that’s not all they do. Unfortunately, fleas and ticks are the cause of several types of illness. Flea bites can be a nuisance, leaving itchy red spots. They can also lead to allergic reactions, the spread of tapeworms, tularemia, and bartonellosis. Tick bites are often less noticeable but can carry greater risks as the diseases they spread range from Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anaplasmosis to Lyme disease.

How To Prevent Flea & Ticks While Out And About

Taking steps to prevent flea and tick bites while enjoying the outdoors is easy enough to do… but ya gotta do it. These tips are for the people in your home, but all of them will be useless unless you treat your pets. The best flea and tick prevention tips include:

  • Know where these pests hang out and do your best to avoid those areas.

  • Wear a lightweight long sleeve top and tuck your pants into your socks. It is also highly suggested that you use permethrin to pre-treat boots, clothing, and camping gear. This application should  remain protective through several washings.

  • Use EPA-approved products containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol.

  • Ticks and fleas will use rodents as hosts. Managing the rodent population on your property will drastically reduce the flea & tick population.

  • Before you return to the house be sure to brush off your clothing and shake out any loose ticks or fleas. Once you have returned inside take a shower to remove pesticide residue from your body.

It's also important to do a complete check of common tick attachment points including:

  • Under the arms

  • In and around the ears

  • Inside belly button

  • Back of the knees

  • In and around the hair

  • Between the legs

  • Around the waist

Fleas and ticks are no small matter. It's worth your while to be diligent in taking steps to avoid them.
