Montgomery Scorpions: What Every Resident Should Know

There are 20 known species of scorpions native to Texas. The most common type of scorpion that can be found in the Montgomery area is the striped bark scorpion. This species is yellowish or tan, has black markings on its upper abdomen, large pinchers, four pairs of legs, and a stinger at the tip of its tail. The striped bark scorpion is venomous; however, its sting is very rarely fatal. Scorpions are known to live in hot and dry areas like a desert, but the striped bark scorpions prefer cool and damp areas. Scorpions are closely related to ticks but are actually in the arachnid family.

How Much Of A Threat Are Scorpions In Montgomery?

Scorpions are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and coming out at night to eat. They feed mostly on insects such as crickets and cockroaches, but they also eat spiders. Scorpions can survive for months on water alone. Scorpions can be very poisonous; however, in Montgomery,  they are rarely deadly. Scorpions don’t bite; rather, they sting with their tail.

When a scorpion stings, the stinger releases venom into the bloodstream. The sting will likely be painful, and some numbness and swelling may occur. More severe reactions can occur in people who are allergic to scorpion stings or, more commonly, in children. Physical symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Muscle twitching

  • Unusual head, neck, and eye movements

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Drooling

  • Excessive sweating

  • Restlessness or excitability

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Accelerated heart rate (tachycardia)

If your child is stung by a scorpion, seek immediate medical attention. Ice packs may bring some immediate comfort to the sting site.

Tips To Avoid Being Stung By A Scorpion

If you encounter a scorpion, you should use extreme caution. Do not attempt to remove the scorpion from your home unless you are wearing gloves and long sleeves. Knowing where scorpions like to hide is important for your safety. In your home, scorpions like to hide in closets and shoes. Outside, scorpions are drawn to tall grass, rock piles, and woodpiles. Keep the grass mowed regularly, firewood stored well away from your home, and shake out anything that scorpions could crawl into when not in use. Use caution when reaching into areas where visibility is limited.

The smell of certain essential oils deters scorpions. Lavender, cedarwood, peppermint, and cinnamon are all scents that scorpions hate. These essential oils can be mixed with carrier oil and sprayed on potential entry areas to help deter scorpions from coming into your home.
